GALLINARO AND THE CIOCIARIA
From Gallinaro, in the geographical centre of the Comino Valley, you can enjoy a complete view of the entire valley. As Cicero mentions "ad poetam", Gallinaro owes his name to the "Silva Gallinaria", that is the forest to the east of the centre. For centuries it was the property of the Abbey of Montecassino, then of the Counts of Aquino and then became part of the Kingdom of Naples. Interesting is the historical centre, and the religious traditions are very strong: the feast of the patron saint, St. Gerard, an English pilgrim who died here in 639 while travelling to the Holy Land, called by his faithful the "Saint of miracles". But it is only recently that Gallinaro has become a destination for thousands of faithful from all over the world, who flock here every day to venerate the miraculous statue of the Child Jesus that is kept here. A place of peace and conversion, it becomes a safe haven for souls in search.
La Ciociaria is easily accessible from both Rome and Naples and their respective airports. A day of shopping in Rome is a common pastime, while an even shorter journey takes you to the beautiful beaches south of Rome. Alternatively, drive east, and the mountains of the Abruzzo National Park await you with horse trekking in the magnificent beech forests, and sparkling mountain lakes and rivers where you can bathe in the summer heat. And at the other end of the temperature, even though Arpino itself is temperate, less than an hour's drive away you will reach the winter ski slopes.
Often neglected, both by tourists and foreigners in search of an Italian home, in favour of the most advertised regions of Tuscany and Umbria, Ciociaria remains largely an unspoilt pearl with beautiful landscapes and medieval villages on top of the hills. A house or second home in Ciociaria, in the hilly towns of Arpino, Veroli, Alatri or in the gentle countryside surrounding them, will offer you an environment where over two thousand years of history combine with an idyllic Italian rural lifestyle, where you can still discover the "real" Italy and take time off from the crowded crowds of big tourist cities, even though it is less than ninety minutes away from the centre of Rome or one of Rome's two airports.
