CASTELLIRI AND CIOCIARIA
The territory of Castelliri, washed by the Liri river, extends at the foot of the Ernici mountains. Due to the amenity of the area, the presence of man has been felt since the dawn of civilisation.
Presumably destroyed during the barbarian invasions, a modest castle was rebuilt on the same site in the Middle Ages, which has been handed down to us by the sources under the name of Castelluccio. At that time, it had 1640 inhabitants, a hospital and an agrarian bank. In 1878 the name Castelliri was authorised. Destroyed by the 1915 earthquake, it was rebuilt and today has a flourishing industrial area.
Ciociaria is easily accessible from Rome and Naples and their respective airports. A day of shopping in Rome is a common pastime, while an even shorter trip takes you to the enchanting beaches south of Rome. Alternatively, drive east, and the mountains of the Abruzzo National Park await with horse riding through magnificent beech forests and sparkling mountain lakes and rivers where you can swim in the summer heat. And at the other end of the temperature spectrum, although Artina itself is temperate, it is less than an hour's drive to the winter ski slopes.
Ciociaria remains largely an unspoilt jewel with beautiful landscapes and medieval villages. A home or second home in Ciociaria, whether in the hilltop towns of Atina, Arpino, Veroli, Alatri or the rolling countryside surrounding them, will offer you an environment where over two thousand years of history combine with an idyllic rural Italian lifestyle where you can still discover the 'real' Italy and unplug from the hectic crowds of the big tourist cities, while being less than ninety minutes drive from the centre of Rome or either of Rome's two airports.
