DOLCEACQUA, THE DREAM VILLAGE
In the capital of the famous Rossese wine, below the old castle of the Dorias, enjoying yourself among the medieval labyrinths
Dolceacqua captures your heart and leaves a sign in your memories. We are in the land of the Riviera Ligure protected-origin-denomination oil, taggiasche olives and above all Rossese di Dolceacqua controlled-origin-denomination wine: all reasons making it worth a visit and a stay. It may be the atmosphere of the Middle Ages, it may be the ruins of the Castle of the Dorias, perched on top of the hill, the scenographic donkey-back Roman bridge over the river Nervia – everything seems to be harmonically arranged to welcome you and accompany you in the discovery of the place.
A fascinating feature is that of the caruggi (alleys) that climb towards the castle through a maze of slopes and flights of steps surmounted by stone arches that join together the palazzos and the houses. Light filters through with difficulty creating a magic and surreal atmosphere. Claude Monet was bewitched by the charm of this place and captured it in 4 canvases. At the foot of the Castle there is one of the homes of the Liguria Regional Wine Shop. The first controlled-origin-denomination in Liguria went precisely to Rossese di Dolceacqua, a good ruby red wine with a soft, aromatic and sweet taste, whose lowest alcohol strength is 12.5 percent.
In the surrounding olive groves there are instead picked the taggiasche olives that characterize the Riviera Ligure protected-origin-denomination extra virgin olive oil. To taste the typical products of the place on 16th August there is the Feast of the Michetta: a small sweetmeat of oval brioches. Other local specialties are barbagiuai: fried fagottini, made with ravioli pasta and with pumpkin puree boiled with the addition of spicy bruss (bruzzo) cheese.
