Maratea is a charming old town which still preserves its genuine Italian character, surrounded as it is by mountains and overlooking the Tyrrhenian sea it offers one Italy’s most stunning coastlines. The unspoilt nature of this rugged western coast of Basilicata extends over 30 Kms along which there are many small hidden beaches providing safe bathing in limpid water which each year are awarded the coveted blue flag by meeting strict criteria for Water Quality, Environmental Management, and Safety.
Until fairly recently a well kept a secret outside of Italy, Maratea is however well known among Italians as a resort frequented by the well-healed tourist, many families from the professional classes of Rome and Naples have villas in the surrounding countryside. These villas usually stay in the family and the opportunity to purchase in the area is therefore an unusual occurance.
