I was just reading someone called Pat Eggleton who wrote a patronizing article on the home page of this site concerning a proposal by a minister to shorten or do away with altogether with working lunch breaks.the writer may even have been to Italy

The other day our post lady delivered me a registered letter from Roma.it was from the ministero delle entrate...revenue again. As usual it was ,to say the least, almost incomprehensible .From what little one could glean it was concerning their "st

i found a chinese vendor (do they do anything else?) who had some useful things like alghae dried, some miso paste, tofu and other things although i was unimpressed with the lack of "elf & safety"the prawns were local...actually around the coast there are a few quite hidden places where you can get some interesting things like the al hal butcher (more like a social club!) where everyone sits round on formica chairs but some top of the range and fresh spices sold in large sacks (no branding or labels) for centesimi..still,and despite what you said,we just had a group of Milanesi staying on their way back from a giro in Puglia where, they said, they never got a decent breakfast there, which is interesting.

yes,we do sometimes (bacon and eggs that is) but also soft boiled eggs, pecorino cheese, local ham, smoked fish, fresh fruit, omlette with funghi, yoghurt, and for some very elderly japanese the other week (in a state of abstinence from their customary diet) miso soup, steamed basmati rice and raw gamberetti served in japanese bowls and chopsticks etc.Personally i think there's a lot more to breakfast than a capuccino and an indifferent brioche or a bun which still, unfortunately, characterizes a large number of hotels and the like in Italy with some exceptions or unless you start spending considerably more on your room rate....

i agree entirely. hence why the comment about bacon and eggs....certainly a lot more interesting than a coffee and a bun,no?

Actually i'm amazed as to how many people feel so dreadfully bound up with international finance vis a vis euro collapse -return to lira-collapse of real estate market etc etc.As i have to work to survive i do not have time to be over concerned with this firstly i do not have vast sums to move about/invest/play with in money markets.secondly nothing i do will make the slightest difference.I get the feeling that whilst teetering on the brink can seem very normal in this country it isn't in the UK.The house which Ugo proposes is to my mind is at a VERY good price and i agree worth alot more by today's standards..i do not have any other parameters to say differently.I saw a house the other day which has just been sold for E.500.000 in this area in the Marche but it isn't a patch on this one.Surely if people can't afford it they don't buy it...but yes the times of easy credit are definitely over.........

i overlooked another possibility- a completely new build on a site. meaning where the previous house has fallen down/or was demolished or whatever,i know personally of an example the people involved for really very little money were able to buy the site with some land around it and because there were still photos of the original house in the comune they were allowed to build it more or less to respect what had been there before with the difference that it was then built to state of art spec/insulation/energy saving ecc ecc with them deciding the internal footprint of the house. The whole place was then finished in the local stone externally with old tiles etc so if you didn't know it appears to be an "old" house. The cost for everything came to less than E.400.This route avoids the costs of demolition too.

years ago i would have said NO, BUT after living here for years i would now say YES. Since then a lot of issues have become more pressing.for example the energy question doing a complete rebuild you can definitively ensure the building against sismic activity, ensure maximum insulation (heat and cold) render more simple all service attachments/conduits electricity/gas/water/sewage etc.Guarantee the most practical and suitable room/space disposition for YOUR needs rather than have to adapt to predisposed rooms/spaces.I am not familiar with current builder/geometra quotes however given the recession ie. lack of work for both categories. that working with a good complete contract with time clauses etc you would be able to negotiate competitive rates.I'm sure some would say you can do all of the above in an old building which is true however (as we did) at a much higher cost and a more lengthy period of time (all to conserve some "niche" or feature which nowadays and using recycled materials can easily be recreated)In the long term or should you ever want or have to re sell your new build would have all it's certification in place from the start and be a great house.IF you can get the old bags to come back to reality (realistic price Euro 80.000 x example) go for it.IF they stick to their unrealistic demands inform them they will be dead before they can sell it!These are not times for fuffing around...

you're right fillide..when the regions were created a few decades ago originally it was foreseen or at least assumed that the provinces would be eliminated.Unsuprisingly this did not happen as these represent places where unsuccessful candidates to parliament can be "put" rewarding their faithfullness to their political parties and where by dispensing favours to parts of the population can retain and accrue popularity for this or that political formation whilst ensuring a more than good income for their provinicial " president" who in turn will hire friends -relatives and the like for his entourage creating a vaguely dynastic kind of structure paid for by all.IF, WE'RE LUCKY,Monti may manage where others have failed to get rid of at least some of these.Based on the current parameters issued by the government in the Marche ONLY the provinces of Pesaro-Urbino and Ancona fulfil the population requirements whilst Macerata, Fermo and Ascoli Piceno do not and as things stand at the moment would be grouped together at minimum o illiminated...we'll see ..still to early to celebrate though.

we did this or rather our builders did this. Its quite staight foward.Steel bars were laid (you don't see them) you still see the beams from underneath) a welded steel net was put on top,the concrete put down the floor tiled.job done. The beams were sand blasted then treated with wood stain/preserver/anti wood worm in one product.

choose or find a reputable nursery,go early in the year even february or early march and explain that you require several hundred lavender plants what would they charge, if you get the right price order them in order that they can organize it for you.If you're not convinced on the price ask for another quote at another nursery.IF you're good at negotiating get them to bring them round to you included in the price saves a lot of trips back and forth.we did this, got good plants ,not even tiny, delivered in pots for a few cents each.Otherwise you can try as others suggest seeds/cuttings etc.Personally i'd go for one supplier for all the plants on the basis that the quantities will seriously bring the prices down and you'll get more homogenous plants together improving the hedging aspect and make sure you insist on delivery FREE included as it'll take a lorry load
