Is it just me or does everyone find the speed of page loading on this IM Community so slow, that  you give up trying most of the time.  I do.

I have just seen that with the latest push on the Marche BBQ event and other fundraising that continues, the magical barrier of £10,000 has been exceeded.

I came across a strange looking creature when clearing the compost heap last year, but thought nothing more about them, until this year. It looks like a mini lobster, but after some searching hav discovered it is called a mole cricket.

... would think the oil content in the bark and leaves would make it far too fast burning and prone to leaving heavy tar residue in the burner/flue. Given the amount of waste that is just burnt after pruning, I guess there isn't a commercial usage or someone would have set up in business converting the thousands of tons that are produced each year?

I heard this on the news yesterday and wondered how long it will be before cigarettes become a class C drug. The percentage quoted is spurious and is no doubt founded on the basis that if an unfinished cigarette butt is found at the scene of an accident, well it must have been because the driver was distracted whilst lighting up. Rubbish of course.Smoking, whilst driving and using a mobile phone at the same time, is something I see so often here in Italy and sometimes whilst the person is filling their car up in the gas station! Mobile between shoulder and ear, fuel nozzle in one hand and fag in the other. You have to laugh, albeit outside of the potential vapour cloud explosion zone.Whilst I do accept that some accidents are caused by lighting up (I am a smoker and once dropped a lighted cigarette in my lap, which certainly distracted me!), there a hundred and one other things that distract people whilst driving, which are not illegal as far as I know. Here are a few others that I have witnessed or done myselfHaving an argument with passenger( s ) and/or other drivers and/or pedestriansPutting on sunglassesTaking off sunglassesAdjusting said sunglasses whilst looking in rear view mirror to get the right lookTrying to find another radio station in Italy where the signal doesn't fade after 5km.any many more.... please add your own favouritesThe illegal activities (under "driving without due care and attention") would probably include ( and no I haven't done all of these!)Eating something that requires to be held for more than one bite - an apple a no no, a tic tac... maybeDrinkingApplying make upSex (having/giving/receiving/watching others) - but perhaps not in all regions of ItalyTaking coat/jacket/jumper off (or putting on, but not necessarily immediately following the line above)I think the day is looming where I'll just have to quit smoking.

Thanks for these.I've found that one of the positive outcomes following the earthquake in April is how much the global profile of Abruzzo has been raised. We had some American guests stay with us in October and whilst their itineray was limited to the usual places in Italy, they decided to detour for 5 days to Abruzzo, after they'd seen that wonderful backdrop of the Gran Sasso at the G8 summit in L'Aquila. We have also had many Italians from Milan, Venice visiting the region to show their support to L'Aquila and surrounding region.

Alan is right about names being mispelt (or is that mispelled?). If you take a look at the Ellis Island website and copies of the original ships register, it's no wonder that this has happened. The computerised records are full of mistyped names, towns, villages and cities, so you need an awful lot of patience to wade through them all, along with all the "sounds like" options. For example, we are doing some research for some 2nd generation Italian-Americans who are visiting in December and they have sent us a copy of the passport used in 1913. As the person concerned was very young (only 16 when he left Italy without his parents) he had a chaperone who was named on the passport and the family had believed his name to be Flario, whereas his name was Ilario. Also the Ellis Island site is not a complete record of all Italians that entered the USA, as we are unable to trace either people on the register for the year they entered the US.We are in contact with the local comune and also churches and cemeteries, but only because we had the town of birth of the person we are looking for. Even with this, it's not an easy task looking for someone born in 1893!They'll be plenty of dead ends, but we keep looking for leads. Looking on the back of any photographs for clues of location and names has also proven useful. We hope that by the time our guests arrive, we'll have located the house where this person was born. It will be fantastic to be able to take them there.Fingers crossed.

Answer to: Olives per tree

Previous comment edited as I was having a dumb moment..We were fortunate enough to get 1.5 litres per 10kg this year. Previous years has been as low as 0.9 litres and the highest 1.65, so not bad all in all. Totally agree with all the comments about having your own oil. There is no comparison with the cheap end oil that one can buy in the supermarket for €4 or €5. It's just a shame that we have so little this year. One of our frantoio's big customer's is said to be 60% down on last year. Most people around here have picked early as olive fly has been a big problem this year.

...... as ours went AWOL for 2 months. Couldn't find him anywhere!Seriously though it is doubtful that you'll find someone who will do both brickwork and carpentry. You'll need at least 2 tradespersons and assuming the walls are for the house in the picture, a geometra or architect who's plans the builder will follow, to oversea the whole project and make the necessary applications to the comuneOur carpenter has been both reliable and timely, having made all our doors, windows and shutters, but unfortunately you are too away for him. As for builders, hopefully someone here will be able to give you a recommendation, which really is the best way.Best of luck.

that they are more likely to be more subservient (aka grateful!) than many modern Italian women who are at last kicking off the past of being replacement mothers for their new husbands. As for the bimbos that adorn most TV (game) shows, it reminds me of  UK TV in the late 60's and 70's, although I don't recall cameramen panning from the floor and up a skirt to get a flash of knickers or from the top zooming into the ample cleavage of these girls! The latest example is in Colore di Soldi, made worse by the leering perve in the stupid suit and glasses. Bring back repeats of Benny Hill!Is there an Italian equivalent to "Political Correctness"....... somehow I think not.

We've used this store for quite a lot of furnishings and have found both quality and service to be really very good indeed.I wouldn't compare this place with Ikea at all - it's in a much higher league in my opinion
