Drivers travelling down the Ascoli Mare superstrada direction San Benedetto del Tronto will probably have noted the helicopter factory / service company about 3 kms from the end of the superstrada. You may also note that the company is expanding to create a runway for aircraft as well as the usual area for 'copters to land. Users of the cycleway/walkway running parallel to the river will be able to confirm this construction by reading the sign showing the future project etc. Local discussions have illustrated that this new works will in fact be a small airport servicing San Benedetto del Tronto and area, and is being built to the capacity of aircraft used by RyanAir etc. This company is; in fact; mentioned in the planning documents. Fingers crossed therefore that this will become an airport similar in size to Ancona or Pescara. Handy for us as we live only a few kms. away...

Ram, thanks for your comments; here ANAS have published in the press that you must have chains or snow tyres to travel even on the local roads. Silly thing is they publish one ruling for the province of Ascoli Piceno, and a different one for the province of Fermo. Ascoli say chains etc only over a certain height above sea level, Fermo everywhere, and in fact one guy last year was fined for not having snow kit as he drove along lungomare at Porto San Giorgio to admire the seascape on a lovely day. Maybe some cop looking for his monthy bonus... Here too the warning signs are after you have entered the sliproad, but don't require you to leave at the next exit. It matters not if there is snow or glorious sunshine; if you are not suitably equiped after 15 Nov. you will be fined. My grouse is with the hire companies (Hertz and Avis) who insist I pay extra to hire a legally equiped car. I can drive a car hired from them out of their depot, a cop could be waiting at their exit, could stop me and fine me. They supply the car, but are not liable for it to be roadworthy. Incidentally; we have binned the idea of hiring a car and are going to travel by train...

Just to note an experience last year with Europecar + Hertz; I arranged to hire a car from AutoEurope, and travelled to San Benedetto del Tronto to collect the car. Although I had the address of the supposed AutoEurope office, I found the address occupied by Hertz. The guy in the office in fact informed me that AutoEurope was affliiated to Hertz. We went through the usual procedure (I'm a Hertz Gold Card client) and the guy accompanied me to the car; parked in the railway station car park at San B. Before I left I asked the guy if I should return the car to the bay at San B. station. "No, you can leave it on the kerb outside the office please". Hire period over; I did as instructed, and returned the car to the kerb outside the office. The guy did not leave the office, but accepted the keys and I departed. After some months a threatening letter arrived from Hertz, telling me I had caused a 'bleb' on one of the car tyres, and if I did not pay within 'x' days, I would be prosecuted. (180 euros +) I contested their accusation, due to the fact that the car was not returned to their original bay; their rep. had not inspected it, and in fact had not gotten out of his chair in the office before I left. After 2 or 3 calls to their 'special' offices in Rome, Hertz wrote to say that they had dropped their claim. If you can; give them some grief as occasionally it is too costly for the company to persue the situation, and cheaper in the long run for them to back off.
