I've not posted for a long time although regularly read posts. I just wondered if anyone could advise me on the best way to help my italian neighbour.

We've never had to make a travel insurance claim and were pleased we could get cheap travel insurance with Direct travel (about £54 for the two of us for a year, and that 's their premier rate not just standard.

Can anyone tell me anything at all about San Vincenzo, south of Livorno (eg. is it worth staying in that area for a few days)?

I dont know if Heiko is still known as Heikover in this community, but can I recommend his wine tasting evenings for the people in the Lunigiana area. We went to the June one and it was very informative and fun as well.

Why is there no book section anymore? I finally got round to reading "The Flight of the Falcon" by Daphne du Maurier. It certainly gripped me as I read more and I absolutely must visit Urbino now.

Our house was also a private sale but we found it with the help of a house finding service who also guided us through the procedure. Maybe you could get advice from them at     www.Helloit.co.uk I'm sorry . I dont know why I cant make this link live.

Our Electric fan oven, bought in Italy (IKEA) and superb to cook with, uses only 1 kilowatt. We found the very worst thing to use was an electric kettle brought from England. We quickly switched to one we could use on our gas hob and now we have no problems with a 3kw supply even with an electric scaldobagno on all the time.

I have sent you a private message Casa Monal

Thankyou for that Casa. Of course I'm very biased about the area, being totally in love with it. When we first found our little house there , over 6 years ago, we were the only English people in the area and everyone seemed to know about us and where we were staying. Now there is an English lady living quite near (although we haven't met her) and apparently House in The Sun have been filming in a village about 15 mins away. For walkers, the Alta via, which I think runs the whole length of liguria, ends a bit higher up the mountain,

I could only access your first link Casa, Viviun, but not the 2nd. What is the name of the site where you found your house? I forgot to mention that there is also a public swimming pool attached to a hotel in a village 15 mins away, higher up (where there is also a restaurant with a view to die for).

Thankyou Casa. I can ask my neighbour if she will consider advertising on specialist sites. The house is almost on the Tuscany border, half an hour from La Spezia and within easy reach of the Cinque Terre coastline. It is in a very peaceful hamlet in the Val di Vara but close to a village with a bank, post office, general shop, bar , restaurant, castle with little museums and galleries and a  bus stop. It is still classed as Lunigiana as apparently it used to be in Massa carrara province before being claimed by La Spezia.

I did ask her if it wouldn't be better to use an agent but she didn't seem to think this was necessary and I just thought that she knows a lot better than me about how things work in Italy. I just wanted to help her in any way I can as she and her family have been so generous and helpful to us. I do feel a bit out of my depth with this one though. I wont actually see her again till the end of August but can email her family or ring her if I need to contact her.

Thinking again about Gala's Italian border joke , when I was in bed, I remembered that the first time we crossed the border, from Switzerland, we were in a "deux chevaux". I'm now feeling a bit put out that we were allowed through!
