After moving to Italy things changed for me in a way I could never have imagined. One night I poured my heart out on a forum,(Italymag) I received at lot of help, support and advice from people who didn’t know me but were kind enough to care.

Not really sure what precautians you could take really. Our schools have a 'plan of action' and go through it annually if it happens in school hours, but as they say 'If your times up, your times up!' I have experienced 1 in Greece (1987), 1 in Yorkshire (2002 I think) and numerous in Italy- fortunately none of them were life takers. Just have to hope we never get a serious one.

This is the second one in two days, it was the biggest I've experienced. 5.3 I think?

Answer to: Drivng license

Depends on if you still have a UK address, DVLA will not put a foreign address on a UK license, so if your Italian address is your only one then you do need to do this to drive in either country. If you get stopped in Uk with wrong address you will be fined. I got stopped last year in Italy and told if I am resident here and this is my main residence then my license needed to be 'recognised' They send your license away (so you need a receipt in order to continue driving) you pay for an eye test, and for the 'pink sticker' and the total will be around €60 it was fairly painless and easy to do compared to other stuff that we have to do over here. Needs to be redone every ten years, or five years if you want to drive with a trailer.

I switched to Enel energia  a couple of years ago, after they phoned offering amazing deal that would reduce my bill. My winter bill went up from €250 bi-monthly to €888, they would not let me switch back to enel until I cleared the debt so I was stuck with them for another four months-  Never again!

I'm in Emilia Romagna and we only have one, think the builder is trying to get more money out of them. Surely the kitchen water dilutes the bathroom waste which stops the tank getting bunged up. I would talk to geometre as well as some locals and if the geometre agrees with the builder then ask him for the reason. It's their house and they shouldn't agree to anything unless there is a justified reason, chances are it's just a scam and often geometres and builders are in it together. You really need to stay in control of any 'extras' they decide you need or you will end up spending money uneccessarily. If in doubt ask another geometre/builder.

Answer to: Digging a well

If you have an old property talk to the locals, chances are there may already be one. I had three which had been filled with rubble. I dug one out - with my hands as I didn't want to damage the stone walls and as it is above my orto I use it to water the veg in summer.

Apart from keeping animals and growing produce, I have been known to forage for food! Try this, it is really nice but don't forget the rubber gloves. oh and find a dog free zone. Nettle soup Pick a couple of large handfuls of nettles (top of plant, leaves only) I usually cut them with scissors and let them fall into a bag/bowl. Rinse, drain and boil until collapsed, then fry 1 onion, 2 garlic cloves, 1 chilli, until soft. Add 1 ltr veg stock, s & p and nettles. Liquidise then re-heat, Very cheap, and very good for you (full of iron).

Invite yourself/family to stay with an Italian friend overnight on the 9th Oct, then you can be on their form and not bother filling in your own! or stay in a B & B. Could be a plan.

Answer to: Buying a car

never heard of anyone 'clocking' cars but if you buy from a garage then you should have some warranty even if it's just three months.  Keep in mind as the buyer you will also have to pay between €400 and €600 to get the documentation changed into your name. For reasonably priced insurance try Italsure. If you are interested in a Land Rover freelander automatic (dent free) I have a friend who is selling.
