I have just bought Philly to make a topping for a cake, and sadly did not taste it before adding icing sugar etc. It is not the same recipe as the English pack but instead is a savoury sauce!

Having enjoyed an abundance of delicious "Fiorentino" tomatoes all summer from 4 plants, the first ground frost has arrived in Casentino Alto, and I have now lots of green tomatoes. My day yesterday was a chutney one and I made 3 batches.

The Italian Robin, Chaffinch, Coat tit, and other small birds and very timid and have not fed from my improvised net bag full of food I hung from the pergola, but they have gone for the cracked walnut shells we threw on the terrace. Any movement at the window and they flew away. Now of course the nut shells are covered in yet more snow!

Answer to: ICI/EMU

In the newspaper il sole 24 there is this useful tool to determine your new EMU. Before Xmas they had an online calculater that one could put in all your data and the result was how much more you would pay. For my 4 bed rural house without pool or garage the extra will be €380 pa. http://www.casa24.ilsole24ore.com/art/condominio/2011-12-05/calcola-nuova-abitazione-125452.php?uuid=AaBfoWRE&fromSearch Compared to the Council Tax in UK it is still very good value... I would rather pay the new EMU than go back to paying nearly £2k in UK

I wonder how the "young people" of 25-30 who have not found jobs and live at home with parents will get their 41 years of contributions in!

Answer to: Census 2011
Wed, 10/26/2011 - 08:17

If the census form has been sent to  the house owner, it must be filled in as otherwise there is a fine. The local comune will help Italian pensioners to fill in the form, so why not English. It is all very easy, until you need to translate your English degree or Higher education qualification as the subjects do not exist here! I am sure there will be no fines for mistakes, only for not filling it in, so grab your dictionaries and get filling! Good luck.

I used white sugar, as I thought the muscavado  would be too much like Branston pickle! I was recently surprized at a recent GeoGeo tv programme talking about potatoes and stressing that green parts on the potato was toxic ( as we know) but they also said that green tomatoes were toxic. A case of the expert being mistaken! When I was a child visiting Ticino on holiday we often were served a green tomato salad, and tomatoes for salad in the local market are often bicolour.

My Father-in-law was Italian born, but had a UK passport, not an Italian one, so he was only an Italian resident and a Uk national. He came back to Italy in 1985 and did not go back to Uk again, which under UK tax law would make his domicile in Italy. The Italian will was was executed by a geometra and no question was asked about any UK property, but the UK tax office form iht400 which has to be filled in by a non domicile asks about the value of foreign assets and the UK solicitor said if the estate came above inheritance tax level they would not grant him non-dom status - crafty! My advice is give it all away now.
