Questions Asked

A friend of mine is thinking about buying an ex-display kitchen from Italy and has been told that there would be no custom duties to pay on importing to England. This sounds strange to me. Does anyone know whether this is true?

Does anyone know if you have to pay custom duties if you take any of your personal furniture back to the UK? Gov.uk implies that you may have to but other sites "suggest" you don't. I can't find any clear guidance.

For those who haven't seen it, this is an interesting 1 hour Q&A by the British Embassy in Rome about the consequences of Brexit.

Page Format.

Previously the latest comments would appear on the top of the page. Now the page is in the date order of the original question. This means that recent comments (to old questions) all but disappear. Can this be rectified?

The Referendum! I was very surprised not to see some debate on the referendum. Very keen to understand what the electorate (at least those who voted "No") are hoping will happen next.

Has anyone seen the new site which details every comune's spend: http://soldipubblici.gov.it/it/home ? Allows you to compare your comune's per capita spend with others.

I see that everyone is running scared after the ridiculous convictions of the scientists for not warning about the 'quake in L'Aquila.

Has anybody else had a 90% increase in their house insurance premiums from Intasure? Or was it just that they enticed me in with a low quote last year?

Conor, "avoiding like the plague" is a bit strong! I've restored 2 properties using 2 different contractors recommended by the same tecnico and had excellent results. Caution, yes but avoid like the plague, no.

We live in a very rural, unspoilt part of Tuscany, the extreme east, north of Sansepolcro, in the Apennines. When we go hiking we rarely see anyone else. There is a good mix of ridge or valley walks, wooded or open. If you want to see the area look at our website www.ilmulinorofelle.com

As I understand it, only about 10-15% of properties in Italy have the Agibilità certificate

Thanks for this; I didn't know about it. Does the UKTV4ITALIA box give a better image on a full TV screen? We're getting a satellite internet connection so the signal should be fine.

From the AA website:  the French government announced that the implementation of the sanction for drivers not carrying a breathalyser – a fine of €11 – has been postponed indefinitely. So theoretically you are still required to carry a self-test breathalyser when driving in France but there is no current legislation demanding a fine for non-compliance.

We paid a couple of years ago while doing a complete refurb, prices supply and install: New cotto tiles, marsigliese not coppi because too windy here - €30/m2 Waterproof layer plus 8cm Styrodur insulation - €26/m2 Our roof had a reinforced (steel mesh) screed and the underside were pianelle rather than timber

I've been doing the same but luckily have managed to go back 150 years purely by talking to relatives. The advantage of this is finding out the anecdotes about your ancestors rather than just dates and places. Although I've not used them here are a couple of sites regarding Italian genealogy. www.initaly.com/gene   http://www.italiangenealogy.com/  I'd be interested to hear how you get on

A friend of mine obtained a very low cost insurance policy (1 year only, in fact she could have cancelled it immediately) from a local company which satisfied our comune. This way she did not lose any uk benefits

This assumes that you have already notified the authorities that you are carrying out the relevant activity. I believe many don't but it seems that checks are now becoming more common, with fines imposed. In our region, Tuscany, you need "Segnalazione Certificata di Inizio Attività" (L.R. 42/2000).

Why don't we all just ignore her - never rise to the bait. I'm sure she'd soon get fed up and go away
