For what its worth this is the route we have used on a couple of occasions and found to be good. Fuel in Luxembourg, Stopped in Mulhouse, Dunkirk crossing - all good.
I believe it is standard around the Serchio Valley/Garfagnana area. It is certainly in vogue in San Romano though can't comment on other areas of Italy.

I would hesitate to recommend anyone though, given recent experiences.There is a major difference between Authorised by: and regulated by: the FSA. Just make sure that whoever you use ringfences your money just in case there's another Crown Currency escapade!

I do speak a little Italian but I just didn't know the word for logs/firewood etc and I know the local shop arranges it but being a newcomer thought it might look a little strange wandering the streets with a big wooden stick in my hand :-) will probably want to light it just for the sheer hell of it. slainte

I also have an account with Crown Currency for fixing rate in advance. all of which gives a variety of options. All three are registered with the FSA.
As in all these things it is very much a personal opinion. I would agree with taking the train though -nice and central in Termini and no hassle with parking. How long to stay? depends - we been several trips on 3-4 day stays each and still go back for more. San Giovanni in Laterano is well worth a visit as has previously been said. Gotta do the usual stuff -Sistine Chapel, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Colloseum etc. Going up to the top of St Peter's is really good. Personnaly I like Piazza Navona, Campo Dei Fiori and some of the best restaurants over in Trastevere

We were also recently charged around 200+euros so that seems to be a standard charge. Readings were all completed correctly.
