Has anyone had any experience of these, whilst I realise they are not very practical if you live in the house full time, if you only occasionally visit, are they better than a ladder?

Well, I have arrived in La Lunigiana, my lawn is mowed, (thanks to my neighbour), I have spent a tidy sum at the shop over the road for anti "zanzare" (mosquito, stuff), went to my local bar last night 25 metres away - and it was empty, when I ask

So Snow chains. I would recommend a 3G/4G dongle and a suitable Netbook device, they can be quite cheap and seemingly more compatible with other technologies than iPad's - although I havent done much homework on this - see mobile phone thread of recent. You can buy this from MAplin -  http://www.maplin.co.uk/solar-powered-12v-1.5w-battery-trickle-charger-98358 or this http://www.maplin.co.uk/buy-car-and-sat-nav/jump-starters-and-compressors the 140W invertor means you can plug a mains plug into it, ok for low powered items - and the car starting side is more suitable for a smaller car. One of the best solutions I have found to warmer nights, if you have electricity, is an all night electric blanket - typically only 90 Watts, eg. from John Lewis/Dreamland. I can remember the nights of having to get dressed to go to bed, ie, extra layers, now, providing I have electricity, I am never cold.... This site may help, http://offgridsurvival.com/survivingcold/

It's been said many times before and there are threads for this on this and the old site, look up GPRS & EDGE, however, http://www.prepaidgsm.net/en/italy.php is a good place to start. What I didnt realise - in my years of battling with the TIM option, is that TIM isnt well supported in my area. 3 is. For years I was only getting 115kbs (slower than ISDN - if you remember that - and not fast enough for you tube). I was told about a local mobile phone shop, visited them, he asked where I lived, and said you need 3. I bought a dongle for €19 which included some air time, and I now pay PAYG €9 a month. I am getting much faster speeds now - so much so I can skype back home - it can be a bit variable - but on the whole it is much faster.  When I am next over - I will check on the speeds. Bottom line - get local knowledge. They know what they are talking about - or if you have the money buy a dongle for every network provider - PAYG and then you can chop and change to suit. One slight hitch, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3976328?start=0&tstart=0 although I am not convinced there are not ways around this, but for ease of use - Think about getting a cheap netbook that can cope with 3G/4G, mine cost £120, and it has been a godsend.

Hi, I am on 3G, it cost me 19€. I went to lucemania in Aulla, I told him where I lived, and he said you need 3 for your location. And now I am getting speeds of 1Mbs download, forget TIM, I can actually watch youtube, yet to test out skype.

Hi Fillide, I dont have the requirements of an advanced phone just a battery torch will do. I can leave it at the house for everyone to use, Yesterday my neighbour drove me to the Mama Africa festival, I had a good time, met a couple of blokes, share dinner and wine with them and listened to the rythms. Had a bit of a dance, and then walked back down to my house. A good time had by all. Apparently that festival is only in 3 places in Europe, it was like line dancing for African music, but it was a nice feel, and they did cheap food. People were learning to play the drums.   I didnt meet the musicans I had met at the hotel - I think their big night was Saturday, but I did cycle up to the hotel this morning for a skype call, and had 3 lovely big cups of tea, tea is sooooo refreshing. Had my free internet as agreed with the owner, and then biked back home, popping into the local B&B, to chat with them, they were off to Padua for the day. LEft them to it and came home. And boy - do my bones ache now. Popped over to the shop  - got some chilled beers and now taking it easy.

AS I am talking via mobile internet, and it is cheaper to skype than it is to use the phone to make calls and you get video

Hi, I bought a woodburner for my house - the recommended size, I wish I had bought bigger now, it only stays alight 2 hours and then you are cold again. That said I love it, it was cheap, and provides a hob and oven. Warmth at night, this is not a problem now, as I provide the beds with an all night electric blanket (from John Lewis), such a brilliant idea. Gone are the days when I only had the gas fire and warm clothes, now when I go in winter I am always snug - and they are only about 70w. Electric radiators are a waste of time as they dont kick out enough heat. I bought a woodburner as I couldnt reconcile with the cost of a pellet burner - which can do both an oven and hot water.

Hi, Thanks for your answer.... It was only minutes later in the opening ceremony - that my answer came through. I hadnt thought about the sports people in the Olympics - those involved are given permission not to fast - for the Olympics

Lovely to hear of your journey, I do find camping a romantic experience (is that the right thing to say), looking at the stars at night, enjoying the outdoors, mucking in, Glad the forum members telling you the horror stories with camping didnt put you off, and that you just had a really good experience, it's not just camping you have to take your own loo supplies, when in Rome - I learnt the hard way, and you are in the city. Now I always carry a pack of handy andies and if I know it's gonna be hot, I take some wet ones, but I buy Boots baby wipes (or equivalent value) and repack them in Bank Coin bags as they are pocket sized and easily sealed (and free!). Friday is market day indeed, did you know - I have met the Mayor of VF, my sister managed to get a meeting with him, he was a blond guy (not what you'd expect for an Italian, maybe the mayor has changed now). But yes I was sitting with him and my sister in the town hall discussing stuff!!!!!!
