We have just bought a vineyard property in the Monferrato hills and are thinking of planting a laurel hedge. Do people have any suggestions for this, ie time of year, fertilizer if necessary etc.

You need a legal agreement detailing tme period and % of oil you get. Not as simple as one would like as we have found out with owning land-there are legal obligations!

Thanks. We really appreciate the information. We are having a lot of problems sorting out an internet connection and this local company may be the solution as we must have a good internet connection for work. If I have a really difficult tech question which I cannot find the answer to could I pm you? Do not worry, I will not bombard you with questions!

WE have found that there is a local providor in our village above our house, a hot spot I guess. They have given us the following data options. Can anyone tell me what the following supply options mean please? Thanks for any help. Italia Wi-Fi I have read some interesting comments here. As regards our situation, we intended to use a land line and probably have Vodaphone as our providor for internet etc. Our ''project co-ordinator person'' (sounds grand but I cannot think how else to express it)  initially told us that this was possible but at a cost of €380/m! We have not found any other internet providers so far. It then turned out not to be possible to have Vodaphone either. So I did independent research and came upon Italia Wi-Fi. Their web site is not that easy to follow but we cannot call them until the weekend is over. We are thinking of the Silver package. We need to work from home and must have excellent internet usage. It seems that you buy the satellite for about 600 Pounds and then rent for about 60Pounds a month over three years. It seems that they have a phone service as well. We may use Skype and what are the calls like using the Silver package? Does that make sense? Anyway they may be the only option. Any commets would be useful and appreciated.

I can only tell you what a builder has told me and that is that gas is excellent but LPG is not so efficient and is much more expensive. Maybe that helps.

Julia, What is your cost per m2 and what did it include ie scaffolding, tax etc? Look forward to hearing from you.

Very useful comments again. For the last eight years we have been searching for this house. During this time we have built up a list of contacts and extensive local knowledge so we know that it is important to do things correctly and more or less the pitfalls. I also know a great deal about building structure etc which will be useful along with the experience of project managing many previous projects, but none in Italy. This project will be exciting but the house is perfectly habitable and is not a wreck. We will also make sure that we do everything according to law.

Thank you for your interesting comments. The roof is standard low pitched Piedmontese tile roof in generally excellent condition but not waterproofed or insulated. The odd batten will be replaced but that is it. We will be able to reuse most of the tiles. We will use high quality roof insulation. The ceilings are the standard semi curved design made of brick. The roof does not need reinforcing. The house will be renovated bit by bit but it is a huge exciting project. The roof is the main renovation point and must be done to a high standard as a huge amount of heat can be lost through it. We will also have a solar panel system fitted at the same time.
