Florence in the Time of Coronavirus

Empty Piazza della Signoria in Florence

Last week, we showed you drone footage of a deserted Rome, an image of the Italian capital we never thought we’d see. This week, it’s the turn of Florence, another favorite of tourists, a city that on any given day is chock-full of people, but now, with the nationwide lockdown still in place, is mostly empty.

You’ll recognize landmark monuments such as the world-famous Ponte Vecchio, but instead of the crowds normally looking out onto the Arno river from the arched openings, there’s nobody enjoying the view. Likewise, Piazza del Duomo, where you normally have to elbow your way through, is empty, in a way that, in normal times, you’d probably only get to see at the crack of dawn. Piazzale Michelangelo, Florence’s most popular panoramic viewpoint, is equally devoid of people. Same for another normally very crowded spot, Piazza della Signoria.

Watch the video below filmed with a drone and share with us a memory you have of your Florence visit.
