It is such a dangerous area that you would think that cruise ships would avoid it. There are many Navy ships from different countries patrolling and literally combing the region but the pirates seem to have the upper hand. They always manage to get a ship under their control and they get huge rewards, although these are not disclosed. This is not the first large ship attacked.

I understand the only way to avoid the pirate zone entirely is to go 'round the Cape of Good Hope. The pirates are using ocean-going mother ships to launch their smaller boats from, so their range is greatly extended.
