The day it rained money

Motorists on Italy’s A14 or Autostrada Adriatica suddenly found it was raining money when a security van carrying 2 million euros in one and two-euro coins hit another car and crashed against the barrier between Foggia and Cerignola on Monday.

The impact caused the boxes of euros to fall to the ground, bursting open as they did so and scattering coins on both carriageways. Motorists just stopped and scrambled to help themselves to about 50,000 euros, the Daily Mail reports. A witness said he was amazed that no one was killed.

A police spokesman said that the driver and co-driver of the van were slightly hurt, as were the driver and a passenger in the car but the other motorists were too busy picking up money to take any notice of them.

Police were still sweeping up the remaining coins late yesterday.

Would you have picked up some money?
