Eli and George do it Italian style

That lucky girl, “Eli” [as she is known in Italy] Canalis and her beau George Clooney celebrated Christmas in Italian style – but in Miami.

In a heavily guarded Ocean drive villa belonging to a friend of Clooney’s the couple are reported to have dined on antipasti of liver crostini and lardo di Colonnata [a type of bacon] and a first course of either pappardelle alla lepre [hare] or ribollita [a soup of bread, beans and other vegetables]. There is quite a difference between the look of these two dishes so we’re wondering whether one was prepared to confuse the inevitable spies.

Then there are reports of Wellington fillet with chives and Parma ham as a main course and there are even rumours of panettone, which we suppose Eli can allow herself now that she no longer has to tread the catwalk. We do know that the wines were Tuscan, from the Marchesi di Frescobaldi – Mormoreto di Frescobaldi and a Brunello di Castelgiocondo.

As for the presents, Eli got the iconic Hollywood Party bag by Maison Gilli while George received a practical set of luggage – Italian, we are sure – and, we are told, a white-gold ring.

We’re betting on the hare for the first course because why would a girl need comfort food if she’s with George? But what we want to know is why did they need to leave Italy in the first place?
