Trento, Bolzano and Bologna are the top three Italian cities for quality of life, according to the annual survey published by the Italian daily Il Sole 24 Ore.

The northern region of Trentino-Alto Adige thus tops once again the list (Bolzano was ranked first last year), followed by Bologna in the Emilia-Romagna region, Belluno in Veneto, and Siena in Tuscany.

Among large Italian cities, Florence came in 7th, Milan rose to 10th place (it was 17th in 2012) and Rome registered at 20th, up one place from 2012.

Naples took last place, down one from 106th place in 2012, when Taranto ranked last.

The survey bases its findings on 36 factors in the categories of standard of living, business and work, health and environmental services, population, public order, and free time.

Here are the top cities according to the categories above:

Trento is first in business, followed by Bolzano, thanks to the numerous start-up companies and a high percentage of female workers. Trento is also in the top ten for population and free time.

Milan is first for standard of living, followed by Trieste.

Trieste ranks first for public services, while Oristano in Sardinia is the safest city in Italy. Siena tops the list in the category of free time, thanks to the number of volunteer activities, bookstores and movie theaters.
