I'm planning a trip from Lucca to Venice in the summer ( I know, Venice in summer!). Does anyone have any views on the best way to get there? Road would be approx 3.5 hours, not sure about rail?

We had visitors from the States last year who found the train from Aulla to Venice the most efficient and economical method, especially with our gas prices. They booked a hotel online (The Florida, I think) close to the train depot and had a great time. They then continued to Bologna and Rome by train. We have always driven to Mestre (Hotel Garibaldi) and taken the bus daily into Venice.Hope it helps.Fred

Thank you very much for this.  Aulla sounds like a great place to start a potential rail journey.  On a separate blog someone else told us the train journey from Bagni di Lucca (where we will be staying)to Aulla is quite spectacular, so BDL to Aulla, and Aulla to Venice sounds good. I'll check out those hotels.

As you will probably want to leave Lucca early in the morning to go to Florence  change trains, and go to Venice (can be a 5 hour trip), you might want to stroll to the train station and pre-buy the tickets the day before. "On the day", there are sometimes long ticket lines and you can experience anxiety about missing your train. Read more at:Financial Advice
