This is an update of the message I posted (which you can read below) about Alfie. Thankyou to those who responded with helpful addresses. I just wanted to post some photos on here of him as suggested. Will update with any good news.
Can anyone offer a loving home to a handsome and affectionate male dog?Alfie is chained up at an empty house near us, in Montefortino, visited almost daily by his sick owner.

John,the shop everyone is giving you directions to is well known to us, he has grown very rich from selling to English folk, and is not quite so popular with a lot of Italians.However, he does speak English, and has a good range of stock, and tiles. I would say, don't give him the idea you are "loaded" or you will not get a discounted price. Ciao Gail, lots of good ideas ,do hope the mystery will be solved,I thought it may be a quail, as syllables seemed to fit, as call is heard as "wet your lips, wet your lips", but then you said its like two stones clacking.Could it possibly be a blackcap, ours get very raucous when they see our cats !I'll watch out for recording.
