Not 27000, 2700EU is the limit you would pay to be in the Italian Health System. You might pay less. I've had people tell me that when when went to sign up, they simply charged them the minumum without asking any questions. If so, you just smile and say Grazie, and leave. Above all, do not lie about income levels. The formula is 7% of your income, with a minumum of a couple hundred EU up to the 2700 number. An American expat will pay far higher amounts if you select one of the international expat health plans. AARO is one of th more affordable and they publish their rates. Once you are in the system, you get he same health care as any other Italian. No deductibles, no bills, unless you go to specialists, low or free prescriptions.

There is now an express train between Milan and Zurich. Milan to Como or Guarda are quick and easy train rides.

Do you know people in Italy? In our letter we talked about an exchange student we had 20 years before, and how we had remained friends, and had come to visit him and his family, and we even went to his wedding. Through this connection, we learned how Italians value family and traditions, and how we had been welcomed and been treated like family. In this way we were illustrating not how we wanted to learn about the culture, but that what we had already learned we found to be of value and wanted to include it in our life.

Tim reps were quite happy to offfer me service in Abruzzo. I do not have my Residence Cards yet. So long as you have a Coda Fiscale, people are more than happy to sell to you. I signed up with Micso for WADSL. We are in clear line of sight of one of their broadcast towers. The antenna is about the size of a small bread loaf.

Apply for your Elective Residence Visa 3 months before your move. In your Elective Visa application packet you will need to show proof of income. IE: Social Security and statements of your other assets. You will need to have a deed for property, or a lease for a property that will cover the entire year of the ER Visa. You will need to show that you have private health insurance that will cover you in Italy for the entire you of the ER Visa. Also you need to include a letter explaining why you want to make a move to Italy. Try very hard to make a personal connection. Simply saying you love the culture and want to learn the language will likely just cause them to shrug and say - So, just take a vacation.

For an American the steps are. And I summarize greatly. 1. Get Elective Residence Visa issued by Italian Consulate in US. You will need to show sufficient income, Year Lease or Deed, Private health insurance for the year long term of the visa. 2. Assuming #1 hurdle passed. Apply for Permesso di Siggorno one arrive in Italy. Will need to show the same documentation as above in Permesso application3. Assuming #2 hurdle passed, then you register as a resident  in your Commune, you can join the national health service at that time. The amount an American will pay will be based on your income. It is around 7% of income, and has limit of around 2700EU. This is for a year. It is not prorated. If you sign up in December, you still pay for a whole year. No, US Medicare will not cover you at all in Italy.

Tim can be pretty dicy in the boondocks. I'm in Abruzzo and Wireless Adsl is a decent alternative. Some of us can get it via broadcast towers if we have line of sight. I friend of mine just signed up for Satellite Adsl. Expect the cost to be around 40Eu a month. Depending on how much you need, and if you can get decent 4G in your area, you can use a hotspot. My Vodaphone plan has 3GB a month for 10EU and they are always texting me offers for more Giga. They had a 3Mo offer in December which included unlimted video streaming at 420P quality. Came in handy during the power outages during the winter snowstorms.
