What is a Group?

Groups are a means to gather people around a common interest. You can post content within a group just as you do in the public space - but that content is visible only to group members unless you explicitly indicate otherwise. Groups can also work collaboratively on wiki-style pages - these are pages that all the group members can edit. Groups can be open or closed - with content being either public or private to just the group. The group creator decides who can join a group. There are four possibilites:

  • Open - anyone can join
  • Invitation - you need to receive an invitation in order to be able to join
  • Moderation - members can apply to join but the group creator needs to approve the application
  • Closed - only the group creator can invite a member to join

Notes:

Only members with the role "Community Member" can create groups.

When you see group posts in the "Piazza" that is either because the creator of the post decided to make that specific post public or because your are a member of that group. It does not automatically mean that everyone can see that post

Since only members of a group can see posts within the group you need to "promote" your group with public posts in order to attract new members

Keep in mind that if you create a closed group - that is not listed even in the group directory - the only way for people to find out is if you explicitly invite them or talk to them about it.
