Italian writer and translator Erri De Luca is teaming up with director Adriano Giannini for the film version of his short story “Il turno di notte lo fanno le stelle” (Stars Do the Nightshift). The two will appear at the Trento Film Festival today, the 26th of April 2012, to promote the work, which highlights mountain climbing.

A hybrid short story/screenplay, “Il turno di notte lo fanno le stelle” centres around two former mountain climbers, a man and a woman, who meet in the hospital while recovering from heart transplant surgery. The story follows their pact to climb the Vajolet Towers in the Dolomite Mountains together in celebration of their recoveries and new lives.

Fetrinelli released “Il turno di notte lo fanno le stelle” as a short-format e-book in February. It is available worldwide through Amazon for the Kindle reader.

De Luca told Adnkronos late last month that he was still searching for a cinematic team for the story, but has recently announced that Oh!Pen, Ombla Productions, Montura, the Trentino Film Commission and Trentino Marketing S.p.A. will coproduce the film. Nastassja Kinski, who starred with Marcello Mastroianni in the 1978 film Così come sei (Stay as You Are), will star in the film.

Di La Dal Vetro (Beyond the Glass), De Luca’s first short film, premiered in 2011 at the Venice Film Festival with him in the leading role alongside Isa Danieli. He has acted in several other films and judged the Cannes Film Festival.
