Amici di Italy Magazine,

The USA and many Latin American countries are celebrating Italian Heritage Month to mark Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas on the 12th of October 1492. Several events are organised every year in recognition of the many achievements, contributions, and successes of Americans of Italian descent and Italians in America.

This year's celebrations are even more special as they take place during the Year of Italian Culture in the United States. At ITALY Magazine, we decided to celebrate Columbus Day with a special feature dedicated to Genoa Galata Museum of the Sea where you can find important documents and information about Cristoforo Colombo and the amazing enterprise of the Genoese explorer. This is the largest sea museum in the Mediterranean with 28 rooms dedicated to the history of navigation which has also devoted a section to Memorie e Migrazioni (Memories and Migration) and the importance of Genoa as a departure point for Italian migrants to North and South America from the mid 19th century.

One of the thousands of spirited Italians to make the long journey from Genoa to the Americas in the early 20th century in search of a new life was Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis' father. Carol King examined some of Pope Francis' favourite things as revealed in a recent interview and discovers many of them are Italian, from Alessandro Manzoni to Federico Fellini.

October 10th, 2013 marked also the bicentennial of Giuseppe Verdi's birth. At ITALY Magazine we have been celebrating the opera composer throughout the year with a series of features on his life and work. On his birthday, we focused on the outstanding foods of his native land, Emilia.

Finally, we thought you would find it interesting to discover how Italians have also contributed to the world of colours. We selected 10 top colours, from Sienna to Sky Blue, which have their origins in Italy, we hope to have inspired you to choose from this Italian pallette to give your life a touch of Italian colour.

Next week watch out for more Italian Heritage Month dedicated stories and for our special features about the Borgias, the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel.

This year we created a 2013 Italy Magazine desktop wallpaper calendar. We hope you liked the idea and downloaded the first months. It is now possible to download the October page.

A presto!
