I don't know about going through Germany/Austria,  but have you looked at going farther West, through the Simplon Pass? 

The Simplon is always open, and doesn't have the 'flow restriction' that tunnels such as the Gotthard Tunnel does have.  I use it more often than the Gotthard route.

What I do when making a new contact by email is simple.

1.  Write (type) the email in English.

2. Copy what you've written and paste it on Google Translate (other online translation services exist).  Copy the 'translation into Italian', and paste it below the English version on your email.
