Has everybody got their decorations up?  I'm feeling guilty!

Two nights ago a gecko appeared in my lounge. It stayed high up on the wall and I couldn't reach it even if I were brave enough to handle it.  Yes, I know they are quite sweet, eat mosquitoes, etc and it only scares me when it moves!

Hope you are all having a great ferragosto.  What's everybody doing? I'm having a quiet day at home with my dog.

I live in a city centre, second floor apartment so I don't get much bother from creepy-crawlies, which is just as well, as I'm a city lady who is terrified of them.

I thought it would be fun to find out what everyone is reading at the moment.  I'm reading "Julie and Julia" in English and a bio of Rita Levi Montalcini in Italian.

Are people interested in the UK election where you are?  Here everyone is fascinated by "Bigotgate"!

Can anyone else see a beautiful new moon out there? Made a wish?

Nothing but bills coming through the letterbox down here in Sicily.  How about where you are?

Meant to say I don't think it was a hedgehog that hurt Dylano.  Simi used to pick them up in Wales and never had any ill effects!

Not quite the same thing but my little Simi [half Yorkie] had a swollen cheek with eye almost closed all day yesterday.  She is never outside without me and we are in the middle of the city.  Today the swelling had gone down considerably but I took her to the vet anyway.  He suggested a bee had stung her but I would have seen it.  He gave us a prescription for two lots of medication and said she will be fine. Down here in Sicily a lot of humans are complaining about "the worst year for seasonal allergies" too but they don't say to what! Anything that can affect us can affect our dogs so I'm wondering...  Oh, nearly forgot to say Simi's spirits were unaffected too.

I'm in the facebook group and many people in it have cancelled their Sky subscriptions. Sky don't seem to care at the moment.  I think they know they will have a steady audience throughout the summer sport season but after that they may sit up and take notice!

That has given me a much-needed laugh tonight!

And there was me thinking the answer was 42....

BBC World was still there today but not BBC Entertainment. I think Sky will be losing me too! I notice there is now a facebook campaign to bring it back.  Sky took the channel off without any warning.

Hi, Lollita. It's so nice to see these replies for Tess here. I'll do my best! Auguri, Pat

Hi again, Tess. Well, it looks like you have some good friends here already and there is some excellent advice in these replies.  I didn't know what a dongle was and just looked it up!  As the others have said, do take care if you're driving out at night.  As Andrew has said, communication is the answer. So my advice is to try to solve that problem first. I 'm not techy enough to be able to tell you how but I'm sure others will have some suggestions. You are not alone: Even being fluent in the language, I felt lonely when I first came and it was one of the reasons I started blogging.  We all find our own answers to that problem and I'm sure yours will come to you. You may not realise it but you have already taken the most important step in enrolling on a language course.  Once you start learning you will need to be brave and start greeting the people you see. Italians won't mind if you make mistakes!  All you need is one friend in the area where you are and everything will look very different, believe me.  So you may want to tell us a little more without compromising your security and maybe someone in the Community lives near. You WILL get through this! I'll keep in touch and am thinking of you, Pat

Hi, Tess. I'm Pat, one of the writers and, as you see, I'm here! I'm sorry you feel isolated, especially at this time of year. You WILL make contacts and feel better so please don't worry! I don't know what sort of community you are living in or whether you are working here so it's hard to give advice.  Maybe people don't know who you are or where you are from? Do people greet you when they see you and do you greet them? Let us know a bit more so that we can help.  Please don't despair!
