I own a house in Marche, where we spend around 6 months each year.

We have had a house in Marche for 8 years, and a couple of weeks ago, for the first time, we received a bill from the tax office (Equitalia) - only for E43 - but it is for 'Consorzio Bonifica Musone Potenza Chienti Asola A.

There is so much to do and see in Le Marche during the summer with each small town celebrating with their own festivals.  Sometimes I only got to hear of them by word of mouth from other tourists, or our local Italian neighbours.

I own a house near Tolentino, with around 10 acres of land.  We normally manage to spend just the summers there, and whilst my local Italian neighbour farms the lands and keeps it tidy - we always seem to have a ton of general maintenance to do fo

Hi Badger - I am interested in how your house repair is going. My structural engineer seems to want to wait to see what the government says.  Even though we were insured for earthquake damage , and have been paid out for a repair- there is a question on whether the house is worth repairing or whether we should demolish and rebuild with seismic controls. We have currently got 18 steel ties holding up the four walls - which don't exactly look pretty !I am also wondering whether a repaired, earthqake damaged house, will have any value in the future if you try and sell it.Any opinions on this ?

There are a number of markets around Marche - some of which are antique markets, however I am not sure that the quality is what you would look for in buying and selling antiques.Look athttps://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Travel-g187794-c94960/Marche:Italy:Markets.In.Macerata.Province.html

Hi Luke - I have a holiday home in the region of Le Marche in Italy. In 2106 around 67,000 properties in Le Marche and Umbria were damaged due to the earthquake, including mine.  So for building work this could be a good region to keep builders busy for the next 5 years.I have no experience of working in Italy, but I do know of an English guy who moved out to Italy around 7 years ago, is a plasterer by trade - learnt the language - and now works for both Italian and English people, but it is not easy.  I can pm you his email address if you like ?

Thanks Badger - got a quote from Intasure (I have to say that they are very helpful on the phone) but quoted £2500 for basic bldg insurance against my previous pre-earthquake bldgs and contents fee of around £700.  Would you mind me asking you what category of damage your house is, as ours is 'E' and my engineer says the government have still not given permission to start the repair.  Thanks

Our experience with ASSM (the local water supplier in Marche) is that it is their responsbility to provide water up to the meter box - which is a 1/4 mile away from our actual house, and then our responsibility from the box to the house.  Unfortunately due to the earthquake our water supply has been disrupted, so we currently have no water, and will probably have to dig a new trench and  lay a new water pipe to fix this - obviously at our cost.   And the pipe will have to run across land where we have to negotiate with three different local people. When we laid drainage channels to divert rainwater away from our house/road, we found a local man with a digger - cost about E400 per day plus materials.

I have had issues with my previous owners of my house, making changes to the property without the correct planning applications and permissions - and so this information is directly from the comune from last November.  My ground floor was converted into a kitchen, cantina and groundfloor bathroom/utility room.  The ceiling height is 2.5m.  I was told my the comune that I could not call the space a kitchen on the floor plans , I could not sell the house without a 'kitchen' being installed on the 1st floor (albeit a basic one) , and I could not apply for a 'change of use' for the ground floor, because the ceiling height was too low.  However, I would not need to take out the existing kitchen or bathroom, and I could continue using it as it currently is - I just can't call it 'legal space' on the registered floor plans, or advertise it as 'livable space' should I sell the house in the future.

Try visiting the local cemetry or cremetorium.  When we were investigating my husbands family roots, in the graveyard many of the tombs had photos of our ancestors on them.

I am right in assuming that there is actually more space, but it is not classified as 'habitable' ?In many Italian homes, there is a cantina, normally on the ground floor, which is not classified as 'habitable'.  You can apply for a change of use - there is a fee for this - to say use as a kitchen- as long as the ceiling height is 2.7m. Also the top floor may be classified as 'soffitto' or storage/attic space.  Again a change of use can be applied for if you want to create additional bedrooms if you have the right ceiling height.
