Questions Asked

A friend of mine is thinking about buying an ex-display kitchen from Italy and has been told that there would be no custom duties to pay on importing to England. This sounds strange to me. Does anyone know whether this is true?

Does anyone know if you have to pay custom duties if you take any of your personal furniture back to the UK? Gov.uk implies that you may have to but other sites "suggest" you don't. I can't find any clear guidance.

For those who haven't seen it, this is an interesting 1 hour Q&A by the British Embassy in Rome about the consequences of Brexit.

Page Format.

Previously the latest comments would appear on the top of the page. Now the page is in the date order of the original question. This means that recent comments (to old questions) all but disappear. Can this be rectified?

The Referendum! I was very surprised not to see some debate on the referendum. Very keen to understand what the electorate (at least those who voted "No") are hoping will happen next.

Has anyone seen the new site which details every comune's spend: http://soldipubblici.gov.it/it/home ? Allows you to compare your comune's per capita spend with others.

I see that everyone is running scared after the ridiculous convictions of the scientists for not warning about the 'quake in L'Aquila.

Has anybody else had a 90% increase in their house insurance premiums from Intasure? Or was it just that they enticed me in with a low quote last year?

We do the route recommended by the Michelin Route Planner. It takes you off the motorway after Reims and takes you cross country to Nancy, St Die' and to Selestat. You save quite a lot of Motorway fees (although there is a €6 tunnel near Sainte Marie aux Mines), breaks the monotony of motorway driving and works well if, like us, you break your journey in the Alsace. And, as others have said, the Swiss vignette is far cheaper per annum than M Blanc.

You obviously don't have to pay whatever they ask for so you should tell them that before you pay for the extras they have to fully justify it. That doesn't mean wooley words but proper analysis of each increase. How easy that will be will depend, as Modicasa alludes to, on what detail was provided in the preventivo. There should have been a computo metrico - an itemised list of works with quantities and unit prices

....and were there any unforeseen changes since the preventivo? Working on existing buildings usually results in extras which couldn't be foreseen. As you'll know a preventivo is just an estimate.

I'm fairly sure it is possible to decline an inheritance. I think it happens quite often when the deceased has debts, which otherwise would pass on to the heirs.

Why do you need a lawyer? I needed one as my Italian mother lost her citizenship by marrying an English soldier in 1947 and had to sue the Italian state in order to regain it and allow me to obtain citizenship. I used Davide Palazzo (office in London) and would thoroughly recommend him.

Thank you for this.

The website says "If the total value of all the items you declare is over £1,000, you can claim a zero rate of customs duty if you can prove each item was grown or made in the EU." So maybe it is duty (but not VAT) free. But, if I can find it, speaking to a helpline is a good idea.

I might change - which bank do you use?

Thu, 11/03/2022 - 07:35

All banks are expensive, not just for running the account but each time you make a transaction. To save money make sure you can do online banking. This will probably mean that you'll need an Italian phone.

I know a bit late to reply but ..... there are perhaps 100s of remains of German positions in the area of Alpe della Luna, that is to say just north of Sansepolcro. There are walks specifically made to visit many of them. The tourist office in Badia Tedalda has a room dedicated to the Gothic Line. But be aware - the Gothic Line in this mountainous area does not comprise concrete pill boxes; the defensive (and anti-aircraft) positions were primarily holes in the ground, built up with local stone and timber.

I've referred to this site to find details of my ancestors. Can be a bit time consuming but does work. Portale Antenati (beniculturali.it)
