Italy has over 800 islands, two of which are actually the biggest islands in the Mediterranean, Sicily and Sardinia, some really famous ones like Capri or Ischia, and many less known jewels ready to be discovered. The truly amazing thing is that you can find an island for everyone's taste among those dotting the over 7000 Km of Italian coastline. If it is culture you want, then you’d choose Venezia’s Lagoon; if it is grandiose architecture, Isola Bella and Villa Borromeo; if it is a taste of Africa, Lampedusa; for celebrity spotting in a wild setting, Capri is the place; for budding volcanologists, the Isole Eolie; for coral, moonfish and echoes of Alexandre Dumas’ novel, the Isola di Montecristo; Risorgimento history brings you to Caprera and the last abode of Giuseppe Garibaldi; while rugged Tavolara once was “the smallest kingdom in the world” (although it was only recognised by Britain’s Queen Victoria). This is why we decided to dedicate a new series to Italian Islands which started with a feature about the Aegadian Islands and one dedicated to the Tremiti Islands. We will continue to take you through a journey around these wonderful Italian treasures throughout the summer. We will be curious to know which one is your 'wish I was there' island by the end of the series!
