This week we celebrated 'La Festa dei Nonni' and the central role grandparents still play within Italian families and society. When I went to pick up my daughter from school yesterday, I noticed all the nonni waiting for their nipotini outside the gate. As soon as the kids saw them, their faces lit up showing that special level of complicity that parents can only dream of. 'I nonni' are fun, they look after their grandchildren without worrying too much about spoiling them, tell them funny stories about the past, help them learn about their culture and always make them feel special and important. There is no safer haven than your nonni's big hug and no better day could have been picked to thank them for their unconditional love, on the 2nd of October the Catholic Church honors guardian angels, and that's exactly what nonni have been for generations of Italian kids, our 'angeli custodi'!
