Made in Italy: Unique, Handcrafted Wooden Spintops

In a world where so many things are mass-produced by automated machines, it is heartening to stumble upon someone who still values the quality and uniqueness of something lovingly produced by hand – and bases its entire work on it.

One such person is the Bolognese Mauro Sarti, an artisan who began his activity by making wooden spinning tops, and has subsequently branched out into creating small furniture objects and jewelry – always using wood.

“I’ve always liked to work with my hands,” Mauro tells me over the phone. “Years ago, I bought a lathe, but wasn’t sure what to do with it. I really didn’t know much about wood then. I started working with it anyway; time and passion did the rest.”

As his passion grew, Mauro took a brave decision: in 2007, he quit his job working as an interior designer to launch full-time into his artisanal activity. He does not regret it. Today, he keeps making his wooden objects in his small workshop in Bologna.

“The added value of such objects is that they are entirely made by hand, and each piece is unique.”
