My Italian partner and I are looking to rent a modest apartment for 6 months to a year in historic Venice. Ideally we need 2/3 bedrooms, preferably 2 bathrooms and a living area (and maybe a terrace or access to a garden if we are talking about dreams!) We do not want to be in the heart of the tourist area and would prefer to be in a 'genuine' residential area We are looking to pay €1,200 - €2,000 per month. We have been told that, because of Airbnb this is increasingly difficult as owners are opting for short term lets on that website. We could also do a 'house swap' for a very small but central flat in Edinburgh or a beautiful small apartment on the Veneto mainland in Spinea. Anyone got any ideas?

We just spent two months in Italy and have been there several times. I recommend that you look for an apartment in the lovely town of Padua (Padova) which is an easy 30 minute train ride to central Venice. There are nice apartments there and you have easy access by train to the beautiful Dolomites, south to Ravenna, Rimini,  and east to Lake Garda,Verona, Milan, and Lake Como. Padova is lively, and friendly and a great bargain.
