Travelling from Naples to Positano

We are taking a long-awaited trip to Positano later this year and I have been trying to determine what would be the best way to travel from Naples to Positano. Should we take public transport, rent a car or are there just taxis that will take us there from the airport?

Options;-

  • Train, [or bus], to Sorrento, then bus to Positano
  • Taxi
  • Car hire - only if you need a car whilst you are there

We walked the Amalfi Coast one year [organised trip], mainly along the mule tracks on top of the cliffs- absolutely fantastic area. There is a bus service along the coast road, and a ferry service  http://www.amalficoastweb.com/positano/english/bus_ferries.html

Well, Alan has answered the question, but yes, the bus service runs regularly and it is very popular. Parking in Positano  is limited and expensive. We were there last October and the area was still very busy. Be patient as roads are very narrow and there is a lot of traffic.

The Amalfi Coast is best seen by boat rather than the road; also the road can be tediously busy in the summer, and parking is a nightmare, especially in Amalfi. Or why not go to Vietri sul Mare rather than Positano - it is less commercial and the ceramic shops more diverse and interesting, and the little town of Cetara next to it is delightful and the location for the latest Galaxy chocolate ad!
