It is no secret that the country is crazy about 'Il calcio' (football or soccer), so it shouldn't surprise us that there is no other occasion, no Olympics, no other sport event, no national holiday, no military parade, that can stir Italians to such a level of fervor like the World Cup.
Private homes, neighbourhoods and public places, fly the red, green and white flag, Il Tricolore, which is usually kept in a drawer waiting for the next World Cup. The flag is waved enthusiastically at soccer matches and even restaurants' menus turn Tricolore (click for some great recipes) when the game is on!
Perhaps the most annoying category of World Cup fanatics in Italy are people just like me. Those very few Italians who generally know nothing about 'calcio', like myself, turn into 'fanatic supporters' and, obviously, become overnight super-experts ready to have a say in any decision taken by the coach, the referee or the players. Nobody is immune!
So, Fooooooooooorza Azzurri, we are cheering for you tonight! |
