Oscar Winners - The Italian Masterpieces That Won for Best Foreign-Language Film

With Paolo Sorrentino's "The Great Beauty" (La Grande Bellezza) vying for an Oscar at this year's Academy Awards on March 2, Italian cinema is back in the limelight. Many film critics, and Sorrentino himself, cited Federico Fellini and his La dolce vita as inspiration for La Grande Bellezza. Fellini won the foreign-language Oscar four times, and was honored with an Honorary Oscar in 1993.

Italy won the Oscar in the category of best foreign-language film 12 times. The last time was 1999 with Roberto Benigni's La vita è bella.
