9 Romantic Places To Visit On Your Honeymoon In Italy

Georgette Jupe | Monday, March 14, 2016 - 10:41

So many couples choose Italy as their honeymoon destination, which comes to no surprise -- the enchanting atmosphere is the perfect blend for newlyweds looking to ring in their love in style with a truly romantic getaway. We'd like to think that Italy is the most 'in love' country in the world, no matter if you are north or south, there are a plethora of destinations that are ripe for loved-up couples looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I can attest to that being a newlywed myself, my husband and I continue to explore our adopted country on long weekends, like an extended vacation I want to never end. These nine destinations travel from cliffside villages along the Ligurian coast and idyllic beach retreats in Amalfi to baroque beauty in Sicily -- beyond the most famous spots that you already know about (Rome, Florence, Venice).

For tips on making your experience even more unique, we suggest the following tours in the regions mentioned in this article: from the ultimate Abruzzo experience, learning Italian in Sicily, or keeping it 'local' in Tuscany with bespoke artisan tours.

Without a doubt, Verona makes the list of romantic Italian destinations for anyone's honeymoon trip. Skip the horrid Romeo & Juliet house and head up to Castel San Pietro for the views instead..
The Abruzzo region is one of Italy's secret treasures, with less-crowds and charming local villages that seem set back in time. A must visit is the castle of Roccascalegna, built by the Lombards on solid rock and overlooking the Sangro Valley
In Tuscany lies a small village overlooking the beautiful Val d'Orcia, one of the most popular destinations for visitors. While Pienza and Montepulciano get a lot of attention, one town we adore is Monticchiello with summer theater productions.
We consider the city of Matera as almost unreal, its unusual appearance of castles and houses carved in the 'sassi' transports the visitor into another world. Once the shame of Italy, now it remains one of the most romantic, ideal stops in Basilicata.
Positano tends to be the most popular visit in the famous Amalfi Coast, but for a more low-key and (lower cost) experience, stop at Praiano. Rent a boat from the small marina and explore the stunning coastline.
More well-known than Praiano, Ravello is a refined, polished town high above Amalfi, with some of the best views over the gulf of Salerno. Famous visitors include Virginia Woolf and DH Lawrence, a visit to the 11th-century Duomo di Ravello is a must.
The medieval town of Todi in Umbria stands on the top of a hill overlooking the beautiful Tevere Valley. It's a great base to discover nearby Perugia, Spoleto and Orvieto. Make sure to visit the underground cisterns, which date back to Roman times.
We love colorful Camogli, a typical, romantic seaside village overlooking the gulf of paradise in Italy's Liguria region, more laid back than popular Portofino., but no less charming.
Beautiful Noto, a Unesco World Heritage Site, this Sicilian Baroque town was built in the wake of a 17th-century earthquake. It's the perfect place to wander and take in the baroque beauty and lovely buttressed balconies (Palazzo Nicolaci is a favorite).
