Yesterday, the Italian quartet, Alice Mizzau, Alice Nesti, Diletta Carli and Federica Pellegrini, won the gold medal for the women's 4x200 freestyle relay.

Olympic gold medallist and long course world champion Federica Pellegrini (second from left) kicked it up a gear in the last stretch, leaving behind Katinka Hosszu (who started out with a 1"60 head start), winning the race in 7'52"90. The Hungarian team (7'54"70) came after the Italian team, followed by Slovenia, which took bronze in 7'59"73.

Pellegrini is the first female Olympic champion in the history of Italian swimming; she is also the only Italian swimmer to have set world records in more than one event.
