Italian shoppers and retailers are readying themselves for one of the biggest sales of the year. Businesses across Italy will offer major discounts when the saldi begin on the 2nd July.

The Italian fashion commerce federation, Confcommercio, estimates that the average family will spend 274 euro on marked down clothing and shoes.

All together, the total amount spent during the famous biannual sales is expected to exceed 4.1 billion euros.

The saldi bring out bargain hunters throughout the country but they also mean big business for retailers. Experts predict that the 2011 summer sales will account for 12% of the total annual turnover in the clothing and footwear sectors.

If you are preparing to take on the saldi crowds to find a major deal, know that Italian retailers are required to mark the original price, the discount, and the new final price on all sale tags.

Even at a discount, the shopping can add up. An average sale shopper will spend 114 euro this summer.
