Earlier this month, the Vatican announced the first international competition for a piece of sacred music to be sung by the Vatican’s choir. With a maximum time limit of 15 minutes, the only requirement is simply to set the Creed in Latin to music.

The theme suggested by Cardinal Ravasi, President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, to composers interested in entering the competition is the “Symbol of the Apostles”.

Organised by the Pontificio Consiglio della Cultura, the Sagra Musicale Umbra and the Fondazione Perugia Musica Classica, entries must be sent in by the 20th of July.

The winner will be chosen by an international jury presided by Georgian composer Giya Kincheli. The work of the three selected finalists will be performed by Stockholm Cathedral’s Saint Jacobs Chamber Choir at the 67th Sagra Musicale Umbra in Perugia entitled "Angels & Demons". The concert will take place on the 14th of September and the jury will announce the winner at the end of the evening.
