Italian Researchers Create Anti-Aging Super Tomato

A bowl of spaghetti may soon be as revitalizing as a trip to the spa now that researchers in Italy have produced a tomato with three times the antioxidant lycopene.

The super tomato was developed exclusively in Italy without using genetic engineering. The new breed was nurtured over several years on 30 farms across the country.

The lycopene-laden tomatoes will be in supermarkets by the end of July, identified by the name ‘Pomi L+’. The creators promise that the new produce carries with it: ‘safety, Italianism, and product quality’.

Lycopene has been shown to have effects that offset aging, prevent cardiovascular disease and lower risk for certain cancers. Heat enables the molecule to break down and attract free radicals in the body, giving diners all over the world one more reason to choose a delicious tomato-based Italian dish for their next meal.
