Viva la frutta! How to Say the Names of Fruit Trees

| Sat, 04/12/2014 - 03:00

Albero da frutto means ‘fruit tree’, although for some fruits, once you learn their name, you also know the name of its tree:

La mela, il melo - Apple, apple tree

La pera, il pero - Pear, pear tree

La castagna, il castagno - Chestnut, chestnut tree

L’albicocca, l’albicocco - Apricot, apricot tree

L’arancia, l’arancio - Orange, orange tree

La pesca, il pesco - Peach, peach tree

La ciliegia, il ciliegio - Cherry, cherry tree

It’s not valid for all fruits that grow on trees, unfortunately, so if in doubt you could say albero di ... for example albero di limoni for ‘lemon tree’, or albero di mango for 'mango tree'.
