Which books would you take with you to a desert island? Firstly, I hope I will never end up on a desert island, I am Italian, I need people to talk to, yell at and laugh with. Secondly, how could I possibly choose just one book to take with me? What about taking an e-reader with a long list of books on it? What I am sure about is that Dante and Shakespeare will be on that list. My passion for their work started in school, where they usually manage to make you hate literature, poetry and books in general. Sure I had an excellent teacher, but the ultimate merit goes to two authors whose masterpieces could charm a 14-15 years old girl centuries after being written by them. This year we celebrate the 450th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth. And if many Italians like me are in love with his work, he surely had a thing for Italy considering that a third of his plays are set in the Bel Paese. Did he travel to Italy? Was he actually Italian as a Sicilian scholar recently claimed? I don't know, all I know is that no one can resist the charm of Shakespeare's Italy, a Shakespeare in Amore!
