A teenage hooligan was arrested Wednesday for the death of a police officer in a riot that shocked Italy and spurred a nationwide crackdown on soccer violence.
The youth, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, has been held since he was identified in video footage of the February 2 riot.
Filippo Raciti, 38, received fatal internal injuries as fans fought police with metal bars and powerful firecrackers during the Serie A derby between Catania and Palermo.
Police say the unnamed fan hit the police officer with a piece of metal piping ripped from a stadium toilet.
Raciti died later in hospital of liver injuries, leaving a wife and two children.
The riot led to a hooligan clampdown that forced four Serie A clubs to close their doors until they meet new security requirements.
Catania's ground was shut down until the end of the season.
