Wishing on a star (and toasting with wine)

The night of San Lorenzo is one of the favourite August nights for Italians that gather in outdoor locations to watch the shooting stars or "tears of San Lorenzo".

The shooting stars are actually a result of the Perseidi meteor shower. Each year the Earth passes through a cloud of dust left from the orbit of the Swift-Tuttle comet.

These tiny particles are “eaten up” at great speed in the highest layers of the atmosphere, creating these amazing trails in the sky - the "shooting stars".

On rare occasions sometimes larger fragments come into the lower atmospheric layers: in this case, there is a fantastic fireball which can be brighter than the brightest stars in the sky, and with an incredible range of color, shape and trail lengths, which can last in the night sky for several minutes.

"Calici di Stelle” was conceived by the Wine Tourism Movement offering events across Italy that pair the natural show of the meteorite shower to quality wine.

On August 10th, in the historical centres and piazzas of Italy, among courtyards of wineries and castles, aficionados can taste the best wines from the associated wineries coupled with typical quality products that express the local heritage of every region that participates in the event.
