The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is the viral phenomenon of the summer, boosted by scores of celebrities dumping a bucket of ice water on themselves and challenging three other people to do the same or donate money to research for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a degenerative condition also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Participants post the videos on social media.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has gone so viral it has raised $22.9 million in contributions to the association since July 29, compared with less than $50,000 in the same period last year.
