IMU nightmare - what to do?

Submitted by andyP on

We bought our house in 2005, obtained residency within a year and have lived in Lazio as IT residents since. However, last year my mother in UK became gravely ill and we have spent much more time there with her in the last 18 months or so. We come to Lazio occasionally just to maintain the house but not for very long.
We have just come back to cut the grass etc. and our neighbour told us about this new IMU tax which apparently has to be paid by next week, at least in part. How on earth are absentees supposed to know about this and are there provisions for unusual situations?

New To This Forum

Hi Everyone, I have joined the forum because my husband & I have a beautiful renovated farmhouse in Le Marche. We spend a lot of time at the house & have made really good friends with the local farming community, I bake cakes & they bring me everything from Olive Oil - From our own trees, which he manages for us FOC :) To, eggs, salad, & grappa!!! My Italian is still not very good, my husbands is better, normally the case I hear often. I would like to hear from other people like us that are living within the region

New/old reclaim bricks, cotta tiles and chestnut/oak

Having lived in a 400 year old cottage in the Midlands which we renovated we know exactly where to find really good repro' or genuine antique building materials in the UK but are starting all over again in Italy in the Lazio region with a 300 year old casale. There are many 'posh' Italian mags with ads for VERY expensive looking repro cotta and bricks etc but i wondered if anyone who's a bit of a nerd about these things like me knows where there are really authentic looking repro materials which don't cost a silly amount?

Courier service Italy

I think we might end up moving some of our possessions in a piecemeal fashion and I am wondering if anyone knows the cheapest way of sending biggish boxes to Italy? I saw the Italy 'Man with a Van' suggestions which is £170 M2 and wondered what peoples' experiences were of using a courier or part load international removal service and how this weighs up with us remving seats and loading up our VW Sharan and doing a DIY job! We are an hour from Rome near Rieti and the very last 500m is a strada bianca - not too bad but you couldn't get a huge truck down it I imagine!

Mortgages

Submitted by rachel68 on

We are an English family looking to find an Italian mortgage to renovate 'half' of our Italian home. Half will have been finished prior to the mortgage and have been told by Barclays to approach a local lender as I will have Italian residency. However my partner won't have Italian residency and I was hoping to 'lump' our two salaries together to make a mortgage viable in the eyes of our lender. I am wondering how they'll deal with a mortgage in two names with two countries of residency if at all.
