Growing squashes here

This is my first year attempting to grow some different veg.  Planted some seed (admit came from uk) of a squash 'Jumbo Pink Banana'.   They've taken off and produce many flowers, ( presume like zuchini they do the male and female flower thing), and the fruits that start to form all have had what looks like 'blossom end rot', well, thats what happens, where the flower was the end goes brown and the whole thing rots...Is it me or does anyone else have similar problem, should I pick all traces of flower off? Maybe just wont grow here?  Maybe a watering thing (overhead).  Any advice appreciated.

Very sound advice, Steve! It is always better to start with local seeds and varieties. The problem sounds like a fungus or some type of infestation. It will be better to burn what remains of the plants to avoid spreading disease.
