Questions Asked

Does anyone have a recommendation for a great, non-touristy restaurant in Bologna? We will be spending one day there before heading back to the States and would like to have a really memorable lunch.

We are going to spend 3 nights in the northern part of Abruzzo (around the Controguerra area) before heading to southern Marche again. We'd like to check it out to see if we are interested in the area as a potential place to retire.

We are contemplating starting to purchase euros with US dollars, in anticipation for an eventual house purchase in Italy, which could occur anytime we find a house within the next 5 years or so.

My husband and I are Americans who recently got our Italian citizenship through juris sanguinis. We plan on retiring to Italy in 5 years or so and are working on our retirement plan to ensure that we will not run out of funds in our lifetime.

Thanks very much for the suggestions.  We had gone around with his wife, Gabriella, several times but have not been shown anything we wanted to buy.  We were even shown a rudere, in a very isolated area, which was of no interest.  So far, we have not encountered an agent who is really listening to what we are looking for.

Thanks very much for the suggestions, Ugo.  We did spend some time with these second realtor but were not successful finding anything. We also weren't that impressed with her but I don't want to go into that in the open Forum. There are also very mixed reviews of dealing with her from people I know who have used her agency. We have not seen anything with the first agency but may try them again.  We had contacted them once but by the time they got back to us, we had gone to Italia and returned! If anyone in southern Marche has had good luck with any of the local agents, please do post their name so we can contact them.

The PM feature was some years ago and is totally gone.  I had asked the new admins about it and was basically informed that this was an open forum and that they wanted information accessible to all.  Too bad.  It pretty much killed it.There are quite a few of the old members who are now also members of the forum I have listed below.  There is a PM feature on this forum's website, which I really appreciate.  The members have been friendly and very helpful.www.italy.forumotion.com

I would highly recommend one of the debit cards where you use the ATM free of charge.  We have one through Charles Schwab.  The Italian banks do charge a fee to use the ATM but we then get credited back all of their fees on our monthly statement.  We usually stay at agriturismos, many of which prefer payment in cash.  Before we leave for Italy, we call Schwab to let them know we will be in Italy and we usually increase the amount that we can withdraw daily, to allow for the agriturismo payment, etc.  We never bring more than a few hundred euros cash (leftover from a previous trip) and do not go to a bank in Italy to exchange dollars.

You should be able to buy those supplies either at a ferramenta or a store that sells farm supplies, which I believe is either called an agricolo or agraria

Hi Tuscangal,We have very fond memories of Vicopisano.  When we lived near Pisa, our friends had a second home there.  We spent every Sunday cooking, eating and baking bread in their very large outdoor bread oven.  When it was time for the olive harvest, we brought the olives to the local mill.  Miss those days.  Lovely area.

Thanks very much Moruzzo.  We will try to contact the people you mentioned although without the pm mechanism anymore, I'm not sure how to do that.  Will also take into consideration the airport issue.  Right now we live 3 hours away, which can be a pain at times. You had mentioned that you would have looked for warmer climate and easier aiport access it you knew then what you now know.  Where would you look in Italy or are you referring to another country i.e. Spain?
