Hithis is a wedding question. Does anyone know whether I would need an official translator for the ceremony or will a friend suffice who is fluent in both English and Italian?

Well I am still no further forward in my attempts to register my birth certificate in London. The new prenota online  system is worse than before.

However I will be going to Puglia in April with my dad and we will be taking all the relevant documents there to see if something can be done.

sorry to hear about your situation too. I would have thought it would be more simple since you have actually had a passport ! I don’t hold out much hope for me ! I have 6 years to sort this out as this is when I plan to move to Italy!!

Hi I do not have Italian citizenship ....isn’t that all tied in with whether my birth certificate is registered or not as I live in the UK ?

Thanks for your reply and also thinking of me when you went to the Consulate ! I’m still not at the stage where I can register with AIRE because of the birth certificate situation. I think FGan is right and it will be easier to take my birth certificate to Puglia ...the Italian consulate website is now under construction for the pages I need ! Anyway it might be an excuse to catch up with the family out there. We’ll see !

Hi TonyI’ve been trying to get some sort of response from the London Consulate for months ...it’s frustrating isn’t it ?? I’ve previously e-mailed all the available addresses but they just don’t reply.I cannot register with the AIRE yet as my birth certificate has not been registered in the relevant comune in Puglia...this is the bit I’m having an issue with. Do you know whether I need my birth certificate again to apply for the passport ? It’s been translated and legalised but I think once it’s sent off they won’t return it....it’s an expensive business to get it translated and legalised again !!

Thanks Ugo but in the UK you cannot visit the Consulate without making an appointment and they do not answer the phone and the online appointment system never works.... I have been trying for months....so frustrating!

I can confirm like the others have already mentioned there were no issues being a UK resident. The hardest thing is getting the documents translated and legalised including birth certificates. Good luck !

HelloI got married in a comune in Liguria. The first thing I did was book a date with them and I was surprised that the booking & ceremony was free.  I had to do the banns in the UK and then get the certificate of no impediment translated into Italian and the document legalised. This document also had to be legalised by a court in Italy which was not costly. My Italian friend acted as a witness and translator at the ceremony. I did the whole process in about 3 months. I hope this helps

Fantastic so all is not lost....it has been easy for her to avoid the issue because I am not there all the time. I will see what I can do when I go back in April. I dread to think what damage this winter will cause but it might be enough to spur people into action. Thanks for the advice & fingers crossed !

Thanks that's what I thought. As for the insurers the property has not been maintained so it is invalid. i am unsure of the process regarding employing a geometra? I do not know all the other residents so do they take control in contacting all the relevant parties? If I start the process am I liable for the costs of employing the geometra or will other parties have to pay? sorry for all the questions but I am so out of my depth on this one!

A little update on this situation which is not good news. With the weather so bad in Liguria I am on the verge of  throwing away the keys to my apartment and never going back! A tecnico and muratore looked at my leak and they said the whole building needs a new roof. I then went to a geometra and they have estimated roughly 20,000 euros to fix with the scaffolding costs ( the building has four floors). There is no condominium and I have no idea how to get this sorted. I cannot afford to do this alone but split between all the other residents it would be ok. I am now in the Uk until April.i have been told that the other residents are obligated to pay as it's is leaking badly but how do I go about this? any ideas  ? I can only assume the costs are so high because it is a centro storico? I am being driven to despair ....thanks
